PIL Filed In Supreme Court Seeking Action Against Defamatory Remarks Targeting Madras High Court Judge Justice G.R. Swaminathan
A Public Interest Litigation has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking directions to initiate legal action against individuals allegedly involved in spreading defamatory, caste-based and religion-based remarks against Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madras High Court following his judicial orders relating to the Thiruparankundram temple issue. The petition contends that targeted protests, social media abuse and demands for the judge’s resignation amount to an attempt to intimidate the judiciary and undermine judicial independence, stressing that disagreements with court orders must be addressed only through lawful remedies such as appeal or review. The plea urges the Court to protect judges from public vilification arising out of their judicial functions and to reaffirm the balance between free speech and the dignity of the judiciary.
